[:en]HKSA CPD Webinar (8) What does it take to keep hearing aids on older adults’ ears? [:]

Hearing loss causes debilitating consequences on functional ability, social and emotional well-being among older adults. Deteriorations in hearing impact on the older adults’ ability to communicate with others, which in turn result in feelings of frustration, isolation, and loneliness. Hearing loss also causes reduced cognitive stimulation, and thus has been recognised as the most prominent potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia in the recent years.
The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care recommended management of hearing loss for dementia risk reduction, as well as “help(ing) people wear hearing aids as many find them unacceptable, too difficult to use, or ineffective”.
The speaker, in collaboration with the teaching team and the students in the MSc in Speech-Language Pathology programme in the CUHK, adopted the Active Communication Education Program (Hickson, Worrall, and Scarinci, 2015) for the local population, and implemented it on local older adults through telepractice and face-to-face sessions in the past few months. The outcomes, contents, and the experiences of this rehabilitation programme will be discussed in this webinar.
